There might also be some suggestions in this <a href=http://forums.fametracker.com/index.php?showtopic=677&st=0&#entry31611>forum</a>. A personal favorite of mine is Ann Brashares' The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I haven't read The Giver, but I've read other books by the author and enjoyed them, so it should be good.
